"BROWN BAG" WORKSHOPS

Wordsworth offers several brown bags and workshops in Microsoft Word Tips and Shortcuts, Document Formatting, Grammar, Punctuation, Writing Tips, Proofreading, Editing, and Writing Persuasively. Call us with your needs.

For a series of workshops designed to improve your employees' skills as writers and editors, sign up for the 4- or 6-week session described below.

WRITING SERIES

Each workshop will take about 1-½ hours, and I will be available afterwards for individual questions. I will also give out my e-mail address and will answer individual questions that arise through e-mail (at no additional charge). I will provide all handouts.

WHAT I NEED: A large room with tables (a lunchroom or meeting room) with either a chalkboard or whiteboard (and chalk or pens for it) or with a stand with large paper that can be flipped through and written on. It would also be useful to have a projector with a computer link.

WHAT WOULD ALSO BE USEFUL: A copy of a report from your company and a copy of a style guide if you have one. (I also write company style guides if you need one.)

FIRST SESSION: Grammar and punctuation review.

Topics include the following:

  1. Using punctuation correctly (commas, semicolons, colons, parentheses, hyphens, dashes, ellipses, quotation marks, capitalization)
  2. The most common sentence errors
  3. Parallelism

SECOND SESSION: Company style.

Topics include the following:

  • Style versus rules
  • Acronyms and abbreviations
  • Company names
  • Dates
  • Italics
  • Headings and titles
  • Lists (bullets and numbers)
  • Measurements
  • Numbers
  • Spelling
  • Titles and names of people
  • Unbiased language
  • Word choice
  • Additional topics that arise once I see your sample report and/or style guide

THIRD SESSION: The Writing Process

  • Getting started
  • Organizing your material
  • Drafting and revising
  • Writing heads and subheads
  • Writing persuasively (this will be addressed, although there is so much material to be covered here, we can also address this topic in more detail in a separate session)

FOURTH SESSION: Editing
